The first Christians back when it all started were Jewish, so they celebrated Sabbath on Saturday, the 7th day, but they also worshiped on Sunday (it should really be spelled Son-day) to celebrate Jesus rising from the dead. In Scripture, the Sabbath has always been Saturday, the 7th day. Yet Jesus is our true Sabbath, our true Rest, and the Son has set us free indeed. So when the early Christians began to be barred from the synagogues, they began to meet on Son-days only, and Sunday came to mean "Sabbath" to Christians.
Another comment, since the topic is Sabbath, for everyone discussing this topic:
Out of exactness and to be polite to those who continue to observe Sabbath (Jews and 7th-day observing Christians) and who make distinctions about such things, I think it might be good to specify "Christian Sabbath" as a definition if you are referring to Sunday or another day
than the time originally specified in Scripture, (namely, Friday sunset to Saturday sunset):). God has set us free from legalism by grace, and entrusts us with our own responsibility to observe times of Sabbath, working out for ourselves what our salvation means. That said, it is also important to show respect to those who feel there is a distinction about a certain day that matters for them, whether they mean the Sabbath or the Christian Sabbath or a personal time of Sabbath.
And we all need the time away with God! I think Jesus said once to the disciples after they came back from being sent, "Come away by yourselves and rest awhile." or something like that. So I hope everyone makes it a priority to do something about the Sabbath in each ones life, because it is something God wants us to remember, "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy". And when we remember it, I think we remember God also. Relationships take time, especially a relationship with God. You need a time to share your heart with the Lord. If you dont make the time--how can you feel you have relationship?
