In what ways does your family observe the Sabbath?

I work a regular 9-5, M-F job, so resting on the sabbath is not hard for me. I work really hard M-F, and I even work at home and at the office of Saturday sometimes. I find tremendous spirituality in my workaday life, especially after reading the book "Spirituality at Work". But, I also realize the importance of resting "Sabbath was made for man, not man for the sabbath". So, from sundown on Saturday, to sundown on Sunday, I devote my time strictly to resting, exercising (which, to me is a form of resting and renewing), mass, private and family prayer, and spiritual reading. I usually check out a book or tape from my church’s library, and curl-up in my La-Z-Boy and let the words or images speak to my heart. I find "Scripture from Scratch" and "Catholic Update" to be wonderful spiritual reads. Our church gives them to us, and I keep a catalogue of them in my binder. Sometimes, during the summer, I take them out by the pool and review different ones...whichever ones speak to my soul the most.

My wife works retail, so for her schedule (which unfortunately includes Sundays sometimes), it is hard for her to pick a day and make it the sabbath. She has to play "catch as catch can" and she does so with daily spiritual readings and prayers.

I have to say, though, that daily mass works wonders for both of our souls. It is another "hidden treasure" of our Church. I should also point out that, after seeing my wife’s inability to pinpoint a definite sabbath day, I have gained a wider appreciation for companys like Chick-Fil-A that insist on being closed for Sundays. We should all write letters of appreciation to their management staff and encourage them to continue that practice by our words and by our actions (patronizing them on other days).

Thank you for letting me share. God bless!
