In what ways does your family observe the Sabbath?

Subject: Sabbath observance

I am single and I live alone; the plus side to this is that my time is not as prescheduled with activities as those with families; the down side is that I have to do all the work of maintaining a household myself. Weekdays are often so packed with work-related stresses and actions that by the time the weekend comes, I am too tired and too fried mentally to tackle leftover weekly maintenance tasks like cleaning, shopping, doing laundry, working in the yard, etc. right away.

So I observe Sabbath rest on Saturdays: I often sleep in; I make long, leisurely visits with family members I would otherwise not be able to spend time with for long stretches; I call a friend; I read a book. Sometimes somebody needs help with something, and I do that; I’ve set aside the whole day so I have time to help someone pull their donkey out of a ditch. I often spend part of the day or evening thinking about things and situations, kind of review the past week, or preview the week to come, and consider action and attitude adjustments where necessary; I pray. The thinking and praying yields the most benefit, but to be honest often I don’t calm down or rejuvenate fast enough to spend a lot of time at it. And sometimes I don’t get to a restful place in my thinking or my praying; but the following week seems harder to get through and a lot less fun when I don’t at least try.

On Sunday I get up early, do Mass, eat, then crank through the necessary routine jobs and whatever else needs doing, and prepare for the upcoming week.
