The horror and evil in the film was indigestible to me also and at one stage I could no longer control my tears. However, I found comfort in the small acts of humanity and love -- the German officer’s coat, the Polish resistance workers helping him to hide etc. I also found that where there is life, there is hope. In his surviving this horrific period, he was able to pass on his story, through a book and eventually this film, so that the legacy may be passed on. Through this legacy, those of us who have had the opportunity of seeing the film / reading his story, will understand why it is that war can be so destructive and dehumanising. His life served to pass this message on so that we may learn, we may stand up against oppression, human rights abuses, war. His living through this hell and surviving it,is testimony of the resilience of the human spirit.
