The Church has never said this war is wrong. The pope may express his opinion, but he can’t speak for the Universal Church on matters of faith and morals unless he makes an ex cathedra pronouncement. And, if he were to do so we could not, morally speaking, support our troops. Can Catholics support abortion, or the people that provide abortion services? That’s not to say that we can’t pray for them, but we could not in good conscience provide material support.

But, fortunately, we can rest easy knowing that the Pope’s position is not "the Church’s" and is non-binding.
