How can the Catholic Church in the U.S. heal from the sex-abuse crisis?

While I agree that the Bishops were part of the problem in the ongoing cover up of the sex scandals with the Priests I think we are overlooking some very important points. First, the Bishops were told by psychology professionals that this can be healed. Bishops are not experts in pedofelia so they relied on the true experts of the times. At that time it was believed that this could be cured. With that information and guidance they sent them for help in many cases and then reassigned them to different parishes thinking they were cured. So while I do believe that some Bishops should have come forward when this all surfaced recently and admitted what they did, I think if we could at least try to understand where they were coming from at the time it may help the healing now.
