Perceptive, sporadically funny comedy as a beleaguered producer (Robert De Niro) tries to salvage his latest film starring Sean Penn (as himself), and convince star Bruce Willis (also as himself) to shave a bushy beard before filming another, and reconcile with his separated wife (Robin Wright Penn). Much of the humor of director Barry Levinson's satire strives for a trenchant insider look at Hollywood, though not all the jokes land, but there are good performances by John Turturro, Stanley Tucci, Catherine Keener and others, while De Niro manages to convey a sympathetic portrait of a man in the throes of midlife crisis. Much rough language and some profanity, crude expressions, brief violent images with gore, an implied nonmarital sexual encounter and a drug reference. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is L—limited adult audience, films whose problematic content many adults would find troubling. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R—restricted; under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.
