Superior allegorical French thriller -- with political underpinnings -- about a television talk show host (Daniel Auteuil) and his wife (Juliette Binoche) who works in publishing who receive ominous drawings and videotapes indicating that they are under surveillance, but by whom is a mystery. Director-writer Michael Haneke eschews melodramatics for understated suspense and psychological tension that builds unnervingly, though the denouement leaves provocatively unanswered questions. Subtitles. Scattered rough and crude language; an instance of profanity; two violent, if dramatically valid, episodes including the beheading of a rooster with blood; a suicide with blood; brief shadowy nudity. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is A-III -- adults. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R -- restricted. Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian.
