Charmless Italian production of the fairy tale in which a carpenter carves a wooden puppet which begins to talk and wants to become a real boy but first must learn to be good and not lie or his nose will grow longer with each lie. Co-written and directed by and starring Roberto Benigni in the title role, with wife Nicoletta Braschi as the Blue Fairy, the film is a poorly dubbed vanity piece, with little magic save for a few pretty visuals. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification is A-I -- general patronage. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is G -- general audiences.
