Grisly horror flick in which four boyhood friends (Thomas Jane, Jason Lee, Damian Lewis and Timothy Olyphant) who became telepathically connected after performing a heroic act in their youth, battle an invading alien force that takes over people's bodies. As directed by Lawrence Kasdan, what initially seems like a well-crafted film collapses under the weight of ridiculous characterizations and an unwieldy story line that forgoes suspense and tension for gory special effects, eliciting ennui instead of terror. Much grotesque violence and recurring rough language and profanity with some coarse sexual references. The USCCB Office for Film & Broadcasting classification is A-IV -- adults, with reservations. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R -- restricted.
