Troubling Spanish melodrama in which a writer (Dario Grandinetti) whose bullfighter girlfriend (Rosario Flores) is comatose after being gored is befriended by a male nurse (Javier Camara) who loves his own comatose patient (Leonor Watling) and takes extreme action in hopes of bringing her back to consciousness. While writer-director Pedro Almodovar skillfully creates characters who exhibit much caring and tenderness, longing and loneliness, he seems to look benignly on the nurse's wrongheaded choices. Subtitles. Some bizarre sexual situations with nudity, brief violence, an off-screen rape, suicide and a few instances of rough language. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops classification is O -- morally offensive. The Motion Picture Association of America rating is R -- restricted.
