'Evangelization through the new media'

On our weekly program, I often mark the transition between our features by saying, “You’re listening to American Catholic Radio.” But I could also say, “You’re listening to “evangelization through the new media.” That phrase, has become popular in Catholic circles, as religious communicators have embraced the so-called “new media.” For a definition, I turned, not to Webster but to Wikipedia, an online information resource. It defines the “new media” as “a term meant to encompass the emergence of digital, computerized, or networked information and communication technologies in the later part of the 20th century.” On Wikipedia, the individual terms in that definition are marked as “hot links.” On my computer, I can click on digital or “networked information” and be transported electronically to further definitions. That’s how the new media works!

But how can we in the Church make use of this new media? Here at Franciscan Radio and our parent company, St. Anthony Messenger Press, we’re working to develop new ways to respond to the needs of many today to “Inspire me! Connect me!” I think those two phrases sum up what the Church can do with this powerful new tool. Through the electronic resources at hand, we can inspire and connect people across the globe to the message of Jesus.
