A Year and a Day: Celebrating St. Paul and Catholic Youth
On June 28, 2007, the eve of the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, Pope Benedict XVI announced a “Year of St. Paul,” which begins this month and lasts until next June. This universal celebration will mark the 2,000th anniversary of the saint’s birth with special liturgies, pilgrimages and a variety of cultural and ecumenical events all around the world. American Catholic Radio (ACR) inaugurates a new feature: Father Norman Langenbrunner’s “Portrait of Paul” will be heard as part of the program for this yearlong celebration.
July 15-20, thousands of young people from around the globe are expected to take part in World Youth Day 2008 in Sydney, Australia. This global Catholic event will mark the first visit of Pope Benedict XVI to Australia. ACR highlights World Youth Day with interviews and features throughout our program over the next three weeks.
Our faith is timeless, but a “year and a day” are good ways to recall what we believe and practice each and every moment of our lives!

Saint of the Day
St. Peter—and his relationship to St. Paul
To begin our own local version of the “Year of St. Paul” on ACR, St. Peter, whose name is often paired with Paul’s in the Church’s liturgy and memory, tells how both he and Paul helped shape the identity of the early Church.
Living Faith
Ray Suttles of Wharton, New Jersey, was named Catholic Charities USA’s volunteer of the year for 2008. Ray shows compassion, commitment and energy working with the marginalized HIV/AIDS population in his community. He works at Hope House, which provides professionally based social services, especially to those who are oppressed, powerless or otherwise disenfranchised.
Ask a Franciscan
Our resident scripture scholar Franciscan Father Hilarion Kistner responds to the following questions:
• Does St. Paul say that once we’re saved we cannot lose our salvation?
• What is meant by the term “Pauline Privilege”?
Portrait of Paul
Father Norman Langenbrunner inaugurates our new feature, with a look at Paul’s roots in both Jewish and Greek culture.
Exploring Our Faith
Biblical scholar and author Father Ronald Witherup is a priest of the Society of St. Sulpice, professor of sacred scripture and author. His books include 101 Questions and Answers on Paul (Paulist Press) and—most recently—St. Paul, Called to Conversion: A Seven-Day Retreat (St. Anthony Messenger Press). He tells us about the observance in the Church of the “Year of St. Paul.”
Highlights from this episode include:
Saint of the Day
Since the spotlight for World Youth Day will be Australia, we introduce listeners to Blessed Mary MacKillop, beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1995. She’s on track to become Australia’s first canonized saint.
Living Faith
Judy Zarick hosts a round-table with high school juniors Maria, Audrey and Karen, who are planning to attend World Youth Day in Sydney, Australia
Ask a Franciscan
Father Greg Friedman responds to the following questions:
• What does the Church say will happen at the end of the world?
• How many times may someone receive the Anointing of the Sick in her home?
• Does a Sunday evening Mass fulfill the Sunday obligation?
Portrait of Paul
Paul the Pharisee, Paul the Apostle
For a complete portrait of Paul, we need to understand his training as a Pharisee, so that we can understand his conversion to Christ and his calling as an apostle.
Exploring Our Faith
Since 1997, an important part of World Youth Day has been the “Days in the Diocese” program, which offers overseas pilgrims the option of a hosted stay in one of the dioceses around the host country in the days leading up to the celebration week. It’s a unique opportunity for visiting pilgrims to have a personal experience of the Catholic Church in a culture different from their own. Producer John Feister speaks with Michael Hart, coordinator of the “Days in the Diocese” program in Brisbane, Australia.
