Supporting Catholic Marriage

Marriage preparation has been a part of my pastoral ministry as a priest for more than 30 years. I’m not a professional counselor; my sole claim to expertise is those 30 years of meeting engaged couples, along with a number of years being associated with the “Engaged Encounter” movement. There I met married couples who were dedicated to helping those just starting out. The experience of these Catholic couples, and their stories and love for their sacrament, have stayed with me over the years. I hope that I can reflect that love to the engaged couples as I help prepare these radio segments.

I invite couples to bring God into their marriage, to find ways to pray and support one another, to open themselves to the grace of the sacrament. As I work with the engaged, my bottom-line hope is that I can convince them—just a little—how God wants to be a partner in helping them succeed at marriage.

I know I share that conviction with the U.S. bishops in their new “pastoral initiative on marriage.” ACR producer Judy Zarick and the four couples who’ll be bringing you our new “Marriage Moment” each week have the same dedication: to support and encourage the sacrament of marriage within the Church. It’s a call to each and every Catholic couple to make their sacrament a source of witness in the world!
