Praying for Vocations and Promoting the Culture of Life

If you were asked to name the biggest difference in the Catholic Church in the United States between this year, 2010, and a half-century ago, 1960—what would your answer be? Perhaps you'd think of the number of people entering the priesthood and religious life 50 years ago, compared to today.

I know that my own order, the Franciscans, had just opened a big new seminary near Dayton, Ohio, that year. The friars were anticipating that the annual number of candidates for the Order would continue at its then-current level. The old seminary had been bursting at the seams. How could they guess that over the next 25 years, the number of seminarians would decline drastically, and that big seminary would close!

This new year is a good time to ponder the state of vocations today, in the 21st century, as the Catholic Church in the United States prepares to celebrate National Vocation Awareness Week, January 10-16. ACR will help update you on what's happening in vocation promotion. On "Exploring Our Faith," John Feister will talk with Father Kyle Schnippel, who is the vocation director for the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, whose new Archbishop, Dennis Schnurr, has made vocation recruitment one of his personal goals.

We'll also explore life issues, as the Church marks the anniversary of Roe v. Wade with prayers for a reversal of abortion policies; and we'll learn more about our Blessed Mother, whose feast day begins each new year.

Happy listening!

Father Greg Friedman, O.F.M.

Ask a Franciscan
Father Hilarion Kistner answers questions: Is the Book of Revelation a prediction of future times? Why was the Holy Family poor when they'd received costly gifts from the wise men? Is the Book of Daniel called "apocryphal" because it didn't really happen?

Marriage Moment
Last November, the U.S. Bishops approved their pastoral letter, "Marriage: Love and Life in the Divine Plan." We offer our weekly "Marriage Moment," where we ask a husband and wife to answer a question about the challenge of living their special sacrament. Catholic radio talk show hosts Greg and Jennifer Willits discuss: "Whose job is it to clean the bathroom?" and other gender questions.
