Summertime Reading and Reflection
THIS MONTH: We all benefit from some summertime R & R—rest, relaxation, reading, and reflection. Make some time this summer to nourish your soul with some good spiritual reading! And recommend a good book or two to others—catechists, parish staff members, adults in the parish, friends, and family.
Saints Off the Pedestal
by Joan McKamey
When things on my path get rocky, I find inspiration and courage in the lives of others who have persevered in faith in spite of difficulties. Whether they’re friends, family members, coworkers, or people in my parish, I only come to know their stories through taking time to get to know them.
The same is true of our saints. We must get to know them through their stories so that their lives can inspire us on our quest for holiness. Saints Off the Pedestal: Real Saints for Real People by Amanda M. Roberts makes the lives of 10 well-known saints real and accessible to us “ordinary” people.
Pick up this book for summer reading. Encourage adults in your parish to pick up a copy this summer as well. Share copies with inquirers to introduce them to saints as real people whose lives can inspire, encourage, and challenge us as we seek greater intimacy with Jesus Christ. Hurry! This book is on clearance for $5 while supplies last.
Burst: A Story of God’s Grace When Life Falls Apart is another book I recommend for summertime reading. When a vine of vessels in Kevin Wells’ brain burst one evening, his life took an unanticipated turn. This former sports journalist had dealt with infertility, adoption fraud, and the murder of his beloved uncle, Msgr. Tom Wells, but this was a new low. Wells fought back with good humor and persistent faith. He offers hard-earned encouragement for those struggling through hard times and looking for a reason to hang on.

If you’re looking for a good audiobook to listen to as you travel this summer—even if it’s during your commute to and from work—consider Dating God: Live and Love in the Way of St. Francis.
It might seem odd to compare our relationship with God with “dating.” But with fresh insight and a deep personal spirituality, Dan Horan, OFM, points out that the desire, uncertainty, and love we experience in relationship with God resembles our earthly relationships: We set aside time for the people who are most important to us.
Horan reminds us that St. Francis of Assisi understood and described his relationship with God in a similar way. Drawing from the Franciscan tradition, Dating God encourages us to see St. Francis’ spirituality in a new light, challenges us to reexamine our own spirituality and prayer, and invites us into more intimate relationship with our Creator. I’ve selected an excerpt from the book’s Introduction to share with you (Windows Media).
This book is also available as a print book and as an e-book, and will soon be available as an Audible.com download.
