Feminine consciousness is the greatest development of the 20th century, says Rohr. Increasing interest in spirituality reflects this consciousness. Most people acquire their God image chiefly through a woman—usually their mother. Mothers adapt to varying circumstances by focusing on concrete situations rather than abstract principles and transform the ordinary or imperfect into something better. Rohr brings us to recognize the treasure we have in Abba, as Jesus describes him to us—a tender compassionate God, the God who is beyond gender, yet gives the maternal love we hunger for.
