Well-behaved or kenneled animals of all sorts, and their human escorts, are warmly invited to our sixth annual Blessing. Again this year our service includes a time to give thanks for companion animals, as well as other animals upon whom we are dependant. There will be a memorial area on our altar and prayers will be said for deceased pets. Participants are invited to bring framed photos (that won't blow away) of animals being memorialized or those who are unable to attend. Following the service light refreshments will be served to all attendees. From 3:30-4pm drive-by blessings will be conducted on Vanderbilt Avenue in front of the church for pets and owners who are less socially inclined. This blessing is traditionally held on the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, Oct. 4. We offer this rite on the first Saturday of October in his honor. Francis, patron saint of animals and ecology, was a great lover of all of God’s creatures. Our event is free and open to the public, however attendees are encouraged to bring donations of new, unopened pet food that will be given to South Hayward Parish’s Food Bank for distribution to our pet-owning neighbors who qualify for food assistance though rarely receive pet food. South Hayward Parish is now a distribution point for Feeding Pets of the Homeless: www.petsofhomeless.com/members.htm
